Pink & Green

One of my dancers gave us coaches each this fun little gift for our state dance competition. I just adore the pink flamingos!
You can purchase one here
This little bag has me on a pink a green kick right now, which inspired the rest of my post!

Inside the bag is the a mani/pedi set!

I'm excited to try out the nail polish.

I came across the blog "Monroe & Mimosa" the other day and found this lovely set of pink and green inspiration. Love the green striped lamp and the flamingos.

Later I was "window shopping" on Forever21.com and found this lovely green spring dress and gorgeous pink floral crown. It inspired me to make a pink & green set on Polyvore. I just might have to purchase the dress and the flower crown after I deposit my check today..Spring Pink & Green

Friday Funday

Here's my outfit from my second trip up to Portland for the OSAA high school dance team state championships. My mom & I made a day of it and went early to do some shopping before heading to the competition to support the other team I choreograph for--who, by the way, also earned a 4th place title :) In my opinion they should have had 3rd, but it's still an honor to take home a trophy!

Blazer:Target//Top (old)//Jeans(old)//Hat:World Market//Purse:Target//Shoes:Payless//

These pumps, are SUPER comfortable! I wore them all day shopping and all about the Coliseum and my feet never got sore!

My mom is my best friend. I had so much fun shopping with her! She got a new scarf as well; isn't it pretty? Target is the best!

We both spotted this fuchsia chair at World Market & fell in love with it! My husband would never let me put a pink chair in our house, but it would look so perfect with my mom's living room decor. I so wish I could get it for her, but until I win the lottery (or start buying tickets) it's a little out of my price range.

I came across this little print by Marc Johns that I felt was appropriate for this post. I love birds and hats and quirky little things like this print. Click the picture to view his website.

And sorry, this is a little vain, but I thought my hair and makeup looked really pretty early on in the day, so I had to snap a picture. Wearing "Russian Red" Mac lipstick that my gracious sister-in-law gave me!

Anywho, I'm headed to a dear friend's wedding tonight and then I will try to be more productive for my last 2 days of spring break. Have a great weekend!

Bond Girl Names

A few weeks ago, my husband and I were indulging in a Sunday Bond Marathon. We're talking old Sean Connery Bond movies. Any who, one of the bond girl's name was "Pussy Galore". Mind you, I haven't really ever watched any of the older Bond movies, so I was a little surprised at the silly name. My husband informed me that ridiculous Bond Girl names is apparently a thing, so of course I had to Google it to find a list. What I found was a was a way to make your own Bond Girl name:

1) take the last name of your favorite actress (Mine: Jennifer Lawrence)
2) pick your favorite fruit (Pineapple)
3) translate the fruit into french (here)

Mine is "Lawrence Ananas"

Haha, anyway I was amused by it for a while.

I hate to leave you without any visuals, so here is a clip of my favorite actress, Jennifer Lawrence, singing a Bond song "Live and Let Die" in American Hustle.

And let's be honest, who doesn't do this when they clean house? :)
aka "Lawrence Ananas" ;)

Wednesday Wisdom

"Our precious life rests not on our ability to see what makes us different, one from another, but rather on our ability to recognize what makes us the same. What ultimately defines us is the moral strength to believe in our common humanity, and to act upon this belief."

My husband and I were visiting his family in the Portland area the last few days. The weather was gorgeous so we headed downtown to hike through Washington Park. The Holocaust Memorial is there, and neither of us had been. Above is a quote from the memorial.

It also happened to be "that one day in March where it's really warm and you get irrationally optimistic." It started raining the next day, and it's still raining :(

Washington Park is beautiful! Last year we hiked from the Zoo up to the Pittock Mansion, but this year there was no parking at the zoo. So we hiked from downtown up to a ways past the Japanese Gardens.

Statues of Native Americans--Forgot to take a picture of what it said, sorry!

Sculptures depicting the story of the Holocaust.

I recommend visiting the Holocaust memorial if you get a chance. It is really humbling. I think it is something that we should never forget, and never be so arrogant as to assume something like that will never happen again. We should never stop standing up for one another.

We visited the Rose Gardens in Washington Park on our hike, but it's not rose season yet so here's our "before" picture. We plan to go back when the roses are in bloom :) In the mean time I'm hoping the rain clears up for the next few days, because we were really hoping to go another hike with my parents!

Rain Rain Go Away!

Stars

I got home late last night from the Oregon high school dance & drill team state championships. I choreograph for my former team. They got 4th place! They definitely had to fight for it this year. I was so proud that 4th felt like 1st! Our song this year was "Stars" by Grace Potter & the Nocturnals. Here's a video if you want to watch!

sequin top: Kohls// sweater: Kohls (similar)// heels: Payless (similar)
This is the only full shot I had of my outfit. This is with one of my beautiful dancers after awards. I like to wear something nice on the awards night that coordinates with my team. I love our teams costumes this year so it was a lot of fun to shop for an outfit. The only thing that is new in this outfit is the blouse :)

I'm headed back up tomorrow to watch another team that I help choreograph. I love dance!
Have a great weekend!

Wednesday Wisdom

I'm off to the high school dance team state championships after work today! It's been a tough year for my team. They have worked through so much. Loss of loved ones, teammates quitting, grade scares. We even had parents pull a dancer due to poor behavior choices right before our last practice. We had to switch girls around and teach a JV member part of the routine in one day to make it all work out. The only reason we pulled through is because our team chose to shine instead of bow out.

Wish us luck & choose to shine today!

Spring Brings New Life

Last week I got a new nephew! My husband and I have 12 nieces and nephews on his side of the family, but this is the first baby on my side of the Family. My brother and his wife gave birth to this cute little guy just since my last post. I am excited to have a new little in our family!

I also experimented with some curly hair this weekend. I want it to look like the picture that inspired the new do! I bought a cheapo travel size straightener and curler in one, but it was really difficult to curl with. So next time I think I will just stick with my Velcro curlers--even thought my husband calls me a grandma for wearing them to bed ;)

My Merry & Bright palette from Too Faced came last week! I first saw this at Christmas and I really wanted it, but it was $45 then and I felt guilty buying something for myself so I didn't get it and was hoping maybe I would get it for Christmas. Well I didn't get it for Christmas and it sold out so I just decided it wasn't meant to be. I was checking out their website a few weeks ago and saw that it was back and on sale for $25 so I had to get it!

Be Bright
Be Merry

I love all of the colors and the packaging is so pretty. I haven't experimented too much yet. My look below is following the weekend look from the Be Merry palette pictured above. I love the peachy keen blush. It has a slight gold shimmer to it! I also used the lash injection mascara, but I wasn't too thrilled with it. I always layer my mascaras so I used my go to Cover Girl lash blast volume mascara in the orange too over the top of it.

I am definitely a makeup amateur, but I'm having fun trying out new things!

Have a peach keen Tuesday!

Friday Funk

Feeling in a bit of Funk this Friday. The sun is shining but my heart is full of sorrow for my loved ones that are dealing with a lot of hurt right now.

I'm making goals for this weekend to finish at least one painting, go on multiple walks, and wear something besides athletic clothing.

Sorry to leave you off on a moody note--hope to come back to you all in a better mood. In the mean time, enjoy this test video my younger brother made when scouting out some locations to make videos. It's a little moody, like me right now (PS how many times can I use the word mood/y in this post?).

Oregon is so beautiful. My brother is so talented.

Have a happy weekend,

Fourth Grade Fashion

4th Grade Fashion

This is pretty much the exact outfit that a 4th grade girl wore to school where I teach one day. I just could not get over her boldness! Super cute. So I thought I would share with the world what 4th grade fashion looks like these days.

I was definitely not that trendy in the 4th grade. Although I was into floral leggings and sweatshirts, I wouldn't say they were trendy then--maybe I was just ahead of my time? ;) Wish I had a picture to throwback for you all, but my mom has all my old pictures!

Have a Happy Thursday!

Wednesday Wisdom

These Brandi Carlile lyrics speak to me.

"You gotta keep your heart young
Don't go growin' old before your time has come
You can't take back what you have done
You gotta keep your heart young"

Whenever I have a chance to talk to the high school girls I coach and teach, and even the 5th graders at my elementary school who are starting to mature--I tell them--Enjoy being a kid as long as you can! Don't get caught up in the "boy-girl" stuff. Enjoy being you and enjoy being with your friends and family. Don't try to grow up so fast.

I don't know about you, but sometimes I sure miss being a kid. So I try not to take myself too seriously, but when the world's in the shape that it's hard not to be serious and somber a lot of the time.

Do something light-hearted today.
Happy Wednesday & Keep your heart young!

New Hair!

Sorry to leave you without a Friday post, but my Friday was soo busy! For one thing, I did this Friday:

Yep! I did it! I decided to go for it and get that cut & color that I showed you this post. I am still getting used to it. I keep forgetting that I died it and every time I look in the mirror I am a little shocked haha. I really like it, but I'm not so sure it's "me".

Here's what it looks like straight:

and here is what it looked like before

Anyway, I am having fun with it. My lovely friend KaryAnn is the one who did my hair, if you like it check out her facebook page: Beauty by KaryAnn.

One last pic for today. I am loving dark blue sparkle right now, here's a how I did my nails for this past weekend.
The bottom coat is Sally Hansen extreme wear and the top is Sally Hansen triple shine.

My baby brother is 21 today! So I'm headed to my parent's tonight to celebrate!

Happy Monday!

Barbie

Recently I came across article on making Barbie dolls look more realistic. A Pittsburg artist has created a doll based on the measurements of an average 19 year old from the Centers for Disease Control.

BuzzFeed.com
Are you ready for it? Here is my rant about this "everyone hates Barbie" era.

First of all, obviously I have a special place in heart for Barbie. Although my real name is Barbara, everyone has called me Barbie since I was born. Yes, I am always asked to repeat my name and I have been made fun of a lot for it, but It is my name I have decided to keep it as an adult.

I grew up playing with Barbie's and I never once as a child thought to myself "I wish I looked like my Barbie" or "I should look like my Barbie, she's so skinny and perfect". I thought Barbie was beautiful and loved dressing her up in glamorous outfits. I had a book of all the different Barbie's that existed since Barbie was created. Barbie has been an astronaut, a teacher, a doctor, a bride, a babysitter, a tennis player, a flight attendant, a business woman, a presidential candidate, etc. etc. (to see the complete list visit barbiemedia.com). She was a figure to look up to, not because she was beautiful and skinny, but because she was unashamed to be feminine and she could be anything I could imagine wanting to be.

PS Perhaps Barbie was designed with skinny legs and hips so that it would be easier to slide her clothing on? Food for thought.
Where have my body issues come from? Well I attribute my insecurities to many a different sources, but Barbie is not one of them. For the record, I am only 4'11" and I am not going to share my weight with you, but let's just say I'm on the curvy side.

Obviously, our world had issues with body image, before Barbie was created. Who do you think Barbie was modeled after? Could it be some of the Hollywood celebrities that we see all over the media? Hollywood and media has had HUGE influence on our world's body image issues.

Perhaps, my body image issues stem back to the 5th grade. My breasts began to develop before the other girls in my class, and everyone was wearing spaghetti strap tanks, but I had to call my mom to bring me a T-shirt to wear because I was inappropriate. Maybe that made me feel self conscious about having a different body from my classmates.

I am a dancer. I have grown up standing in front of a mirror in a leotard next to 20 other girls. I do not have a "dancer's body".  I have had to change in a locker room for PE in front of other girls, from 6th grade all the way through college. Comparison happened then--not as a 7 year old playing with my Barbie.

When I go into a store I cannot just try on anything and wear it as soon as I get it. I have to get almost everything hemmed. By the time I find a top large enough to modestly cover my chest, the sleeves are too long and the shoulders are baggy. Unless I am wearing a turtle neck, I will have cleavage. I cannot wear anything strapless or with skinny straps because then I have to wear a strapless bra, which does nothing. And with a size 5 foot, it's pretty hard to find any shoe that isn't pink with velcro.

I have lived my whole life, comparing my body to the "average 19 year old's measurements"--not Barbie.

So please--quit hating the world because of what people are telling you is the cause of your problem. Know that we are all created to be unique and beautiful in our own way, and that realistically, no one worth a damn expects you too look like Barbie.
